There is no doubt that a lot of people rely on the Internet for their every need. However, should this be the case?Although some companies you purchase from on the Internet look very reputable and professional there is still that slight risk that you may not receive any product and incur fraud on your account. Which brings me to the question: Why is there no standard for accepting payment on the Internet to eliminate fraud?
It does make me think that no-one wants to take such a responsibility on their shoulders if something should go wrong whilst developing such a system - but if someone did create a system that eliminates fraud on the Internet then there would be a lot of money to make and also a lot more people who did not previously use the Internet for purchasing would be a lot more confident in doing so.The Majority of companies that accept payment over the Internet are now switching over to 3D Secure which is an alternative to chip and pin. I think this is sort of moving over to some sort of standard as the responsibility of fraudulent transactions moves over to the bank so there must be some sort of decrease in fraudulent transactions.
Other Payment Providers
Whilst the majority of companies accept credit and debit cards directly over the Internet there are some that still accept other payments through providers such as PayPal.My Personal view and experience of these is not good. It is like having an online bank account where you ONLY need an email and password to access these funds.
With the increase in PHISHING and people giving away their details to Mr Anon makes these types of payment methods ridiculously unsecure.I think PayPal need to take a good look at their security procedures and seriously think about withdrawing the ‘online account’ functionality of their systems. I also have not seen any sign of them moving over to 3D Secure payments which makes it even worse. Hope this post wasn’t too much of a rant but we have seen a gradual increase in fraud over the last few months over PayPal and thought we should let our clients know the reason why we are moving away from accepting PayPal Payments.

Whilst home computers these days get more and more reliable with the introduction of new hardware there is still a massive need for backup facilities.
Webspace Backups
Backing up files on the Internet is just as important as it is on your home or office computer. Infact there is more of a need on the Internet as there is more of a risk of loosing your files over your home pc. No Matter how secure the server is hardware failures are always iminent and hackers are just around the corner looking for new ways into servers.
Backup Reliability and Stability
Whilst some hosting companies claim to have free backups included with all hosting plans the likelyhood of these being transferred to the same data centre or server is likely. If you pay extra for a backup service it is more likely to be on a more stable server in secure location so that when you do come to downloading it you don’t have any problems with data corruption or have no backup at all.
I know it might sound very ‘responsibile’ to even be bothered about backups but the truth is if you don’t you will regret it when you loose months and months of work or uploads.
Some companies have big problems when it comes to backups and the majority of the time they will be blissfully unaware that the so called ‘back ups’ they are performing are not backups at all, but are just a collection of corrupted files that they cannot do anything with.
The Importance of Security
If you are performing backups and you know that they are working correctly, then Congratulations. Some things you now need to worry about are security:
- Are the backups kept on a computer / server with a password?
- Is that computer / server kept in a secure locked room with fire supression?
- Who knows that the computer / server is kept in that room?
Only when you know all of the questions to the above post do you know that you have secure, stable and reliable backups that will actually work when you want them to.

There is no doubt in the hosting industry that there is always competition trying to ‘beat’ you in terms of what resources they offer. However there are a number of questions that should be asked before you sign up to any web host.
- How many people are hosted per server?
- Are the resources oversold? (e.g. 5000Tb Space - Clearly oversold)
- Does the company have a good track record of providing quality hosting?
- Did someone recommend you to use them? If so then you have an idea on quality of service.
- Is the price competitive?
- Do you have any way of checking the web hosts server uptime for the last 6 months?
Most web hosts will fail on all of the above. Only when you receive a pass on all of them do you know you have found a truly reliable web host.
Competition
Unfortunatley there is a lot of competition in the hosting industry and it is very hard to find a web host that truly goes the extra mile to provide you with hosting that will keep your web site available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. If you do your homework on a web host and don’t just jump into the first one that you see you are guaranteed to find a web host that will suit you for life.
Whilst some of the bigger providers such as go daddy and 123reg are fairly reliable you know they are after 1 thing - your business. Some smaller web hosts generally will go the extra mile to help you with your website and provide extra support in terms of your hosting service.
The morale of this story - Don’t choose the first web host you come upon because of the resources and eye candy they offer you. Shop around and find something that really fits your needs and not something that isn’t going to last you the month.
